The health benefits of red wine have been written about with it’s antioxidant compound, wine resveratrol. This is found in the skins and seeds of grapes. Now all the juice squeezed from a wine grapes is clear. To get the red color the red grapes skins are left in contact with the juice for and extended time during the fermentation process. This naturally passes on more of the resveratrol to the wine. It is the higher resveratrol levels in red wines that are studied for benefits. It is the wine health benefits of red wine that continues to make the headlines.

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring powerful compound that has significant antioxidant properties and the mostly responsible for the wine health benefits of red wine. These antioxidants help neutralize the free radicals that are constantly trying to destroy the critical cellular functions in our bodies.

 

The short list of free radicals include life, stress, UV damage, pathogens, pollution and environmental toxins. Free radicals are blamed for everything from aging to degradation on heart health, immune response, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. There is a debate going on now on which is best for us, drinking red wine for the red wine benefits or taking resveratrol in a larger supplement form.

The French people have a tendency to consume a fair amount of cheese, butter, bread and red wine. They maintain lower levels of cardiovascular issues as a nation and don’t have the weight gain problems we have in the U.S.

Medical schools continue to run test on the effects of resveratrol. Some studies show that red wine and the red wine resveratrol help with weight gain, heart health and the aging process. Other studies show it may be a key player in protecting the brain during a stroke. Still others show the potential to decrease the body’s inflammation response by blocking pathways used for inflammation. The newest studies show it may help in the plaque formation in animal brains as they age and have the same potential for Alzheimer’s patients. A 2009 studies suggests that reservatrol can help lower blood sugar levels and help maintain insulin levels in in diabetic mice.

All the wine health benefits of red wine  are still under study.

At this point research is still looking for the answers to the question. Can resveratrol play a major role in out future health? Researchers are optimistic but can not agree on how much is needed to get the wine health benefits of red wine. Is it a small glass of red wine per day with its wine health benefits or is it a liter of wine per day. (that amount of wine per day is not considered good for our wine health benefits)

 

A average glass of wine can have anywhere from 0.2 to 2.0 mg 0f reservatrol per glass. Now a reservatrol supplement can go anywhere from 100 mg to 500 mg. The jury is still out with regards to how much is a good thing or bad thing. Most agree red wine reservatrol is a good thing. The French believe in the wine health benefits of red wine.

Wine Health Benefits of  Red Wine Questioned

A study back in 1992 showed the consumption of wine in moderate amounts reduced the risk of heart attack by 40%.  As a result of this and other research, red wine resveratrol has become viewed as having wine health benefits.

Recently, a group of French researchers took a look at wine drinkers for other factors that may contribute to heart health. Among the men who drank a moderate amount of wine per day. ( 2 -3 glasses) They found characteristics of lower cardiovascular disease, lower body mass index, heart rate, triglycerides, blood sugar, stress and depression, higher respiratory function, and physical activity.

Among women the characteristics were lower risk of cardiovascular disease, smaller waist circumference and lower values for blood pressure, triglycerides and LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Moderate drinkers of both sexes had optimal levels of  HDL cholesterol. (good)

So again who knows.  How to I feel? I try to eat healthy foods, pay attention to my weight, stay active, take resveratrol supplements and enjoy a couple glasses of wine just in case the wine health benefits of red wine is the secret.

Talk to your doctor before you take the supplement or increase your in-take of red wine. If you are going to drink alcohol then wine is probably the best for you with it’s wine health benefits. But starting to drink just for the for the wine health benefits of red wine is not recommended.
